Weather service issues level 2 disruptive wind warning for KZN
Communities urged to take precautions as strong winds and heavy rainfall hit the province
South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a level 2 disruptive wind warning for the province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), effective from Monday, 12 December 2023.
The warning comes as the province braces for strong winds and heavy rainfall, which could lead to flooding, infrastructure damage, power outages, and other disruptions. The disruptive wind warning will be in effect for the entire province, with the exception of the uThungulu District Municipality (which includes the municipalities of uMhlathuze, uMfolozi, Umkhanyakude and Jozini).
The SAWS is urging communities to take the necessary precautions to stay safe during the disruptive wind and heavy rainfall. These precautions include:
- Securing loose objects, such as furniture and garden equipment, to prevent them from being blown away by the wind.
- Avoiding driving through flooded areas, as even shallow water can cause vehicles to stall or be swept away.
- Staying away from power lines and downed trees, as they could be hazardous.
- Following the instructions of local authorities, such as evacuating if necessary.
SAWS is also reminding communities that the disruptive wind warning is in addition to the existing flood warning that was issued for the province on 1 December 2023. The flood warning remains in effect, and communities in low-lying areas are urged to be on high alert for flooding and to take appropriate precautions.
