Heavy Rain and Thunderstorm Alerts for KZN
Wet and wild weather lashes KZN
After a long period of drought, KwaZulu-Natal has been experiencing heavy rains and thunderstorms for the past few days, leading to flash floods and power outages in some areas. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued heavy rain and thunderstorm alerts for the province, with some regions expected to receive up to 100mm of rain in a short period of time. The alerts are in effect until further notice, and residents are warned to be aware of the potential dangers of these storms.
The heavy rains have already caused widespread flooding in several areas, with some roads closed due to rising water levels. The Umgeni River has burst its banks in certain areas, resulting in evacuations and damage to property. While most of the province has been affected by the inclement weather, the northern and coastal regions have been particularly hard hit.
Undeterred by the weather
Despite the severe weather conditions, the South African National Blood Service has assured the public that they will continue to collect blood throughout the province, including in flood-affected areas. People are urged to visit their local blood bank to make a donation and help ensure that there is sufficient blood supply for those in need.
Safety first
The SAWS advises the public to take the following precautions during heavy rain and thunderstorms:
- Stay indoors and away from windows if possible.
- Avoid crossing flooded roads and bridges.
- Be aware of the risk of lightning strikes and avoid being outside in open areas during thunderstorms.
- If you must go outside, wear a raincoat and sturdy shoes.
- Have a plan in place for emergencies, including a safe place to go if your home is affected by flooding.
The SAWS also encourages the public to monitor weather updates regularly and stay informed about any potential weather hazards.
