Cowboys Bet on Potential, Trade 4th-Round Pick for Panthers WR Jonathan Mingo
Dallas Sends Pick for Second-Year Wideout
The Dallas Cowboys made a move to add depth to their wide receiver corps on Tuesday, acquiring Jonathan Mingo from the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Mingo, a 23-year-old who played collegiately at Ole Miss, was a fourth-round pick by the Panthers in 2022.
Mingo's Production and Potential
Mingo appeared in 14 games for Carolina last season, catching 19 passes for 250 yards and a touchdown. He also contributed on special teams, returning 15 punts for 132 yards.
While Mingo's numbers were modest in his rookie season, he showed flashes of potential. He has good size (6-foot-2, 215 pounds) and athleticism, and he is a willing blocker. The Cowboys are hoping that with more playing time and development, Mingo can become a valuable contributor to their offense.
Cowboys' Wide Receiver Depth
The Cowboys have a solid starting trio of wide receivers in CeeDee Lamb, Michael Gallup, and Dalton Schultz. However, they lack depth behind those three, and Mingo could provide some much-needed insurance.
Mingo will compete with Simi Fehoko, Jalen Tolbert, and T.J. Vasher for playing time in Dallas. If he can prove himself to be a reliable option in the slot or as a deep threat, he could earn a significant role in the Cowboys' offense.
Panthers' Receiving Corps
The Panthers have a young and talented receiving corps led by DJ Moore and Terrace Marshall Jr. Mingo was not a major part of their plans in 2023, and they were willing to move him for a draft pick.
The Panthers will use the fourth-round pick they acquired from Dallas to add depth to their roster. They have several needs, including offensive tackle, defensive tackle, and cornerback.
