Youth League: Salzburg tops Inter, earns quarterfinal bye
No. 9-seed Salzburg upset No. 5-seed Inter Milan, 1-0, to reach the UEFA Youth League quarterfinals and earn a bye into the Round of 16.
Benjamin Kanuric's second-half goal was the difference as Salzburg advanced to the knockout rounds for the fourth time in five seasons. Inter, meanwhile, has failed to advance past the group stage in each of the past three seasons.
Salzburg, which finished atop Group B with a 4-1-1 record, controlled the match from the start and had numerous chances to score in the first half. However, Inter goalkeeper Lorenzo Carboni made several key saves to keep the match scoreless.
Salzburg finally broke through in the 55th minute when Kanuric pounced on a loose ball in the box and fired a shot past Carboni. Inter had a few chances to equalize in the final minutes but could not find the back of the net.
Salzburg will now face the winner of the match between No. 8-seed Ajax and No. 16-seed Club Brugge in the Round of 16. Inter's season, meanwhile, is over.
