FSV Mainz 05's U19 team pulled off a stunning upset on Wednesday, defeating FC Barcelona 3-1 in the UEFA Youth League.
Clinical Mainz punishes wasteful Barcelona
Mainz took the lead in the 16th minute after a brilliant solo effort from striker Anton Kade. The German forward pounced on a loose ball, dribbled past two defenders, and slotted home from close range.
Barcelona dominated possession but struggled to create clear-cut chances. Mainz, on the other hand, were clinical in front of goal, doubling their lead in the 32nd minute through a header from captain Luca Kilian.
Barcelona's late rally falls short
Barcelona pulled one back in the 70th minute through a stunning free-kick from midfielder Marc Casado.
However, Mainz restored their two-goal advantage just four minutes later. Substitute Enes Karic tapped in from close range after a goalmouth scramble.
Barcelona continued to push for a goal but Mainz held firm to secure a famous victory.
