Youth League: Leverkusen Brush Brest Aside
Bayer Leverkusen's Under-19s made a winning start to their UEFA Youth League campaign with a resounding 4-0 victory over Brest on Wednesday.
Goals from Jeremie Frimpong, Zidan Sertdemir, and a brace from Iker Bravo secured all three points for the German side.
The victory ensured Leverkusen secured top spot in Group G with three matches still to play. It was also their first victory in the UEFA Youth League since November 2020, having been eliminated from the competition at the group stage last season.
Bayer Leverkusen started the match strongly and took the lead after just 10 minutes. Frimpong, who has been linked with a move to Manchester United this summer, fired home from close range after a superb cross from Sertdemir.
Leverkusen doubled their lead just before half-time. This time it was Sertdemir who got on the scoresheet following a fine team move. The German midfielder finished coolly after being played through by Bravo.
The second half was more of the same with Leverkusen in control. Bravo added a third goal with a well-taken finish in the 60th minute before completing the scoring with a header 10 minutes later.
The victory was a welcome boost for Bayer Leverkusen, who have endured a difficult start to the domestic season. They currently sit 13th in the Bundesliga following a run of just two wins from their opening nine games.
The UEFA Youth League is a prestigious competition for the best young players in Europe. It is contested by the under-19 teams of the clubs who compete in the UEFA Champions League.
