Francesco Merloni was born on September 20, 1925, in Fabriano, Italy. His father, Aristide Merloni, was a successful entrepreneur who founded the Merloni Elettrodomestici company in 1934. Francesco grew up in the family business and developed a passion for engineering and innovation from a young age.

Merloni attended the University of Bologna, where he earned a degree in electrical engineering. After graduating, he returned to the family business and began working on new product development.

Under Francesco Merloni's leadership, Merloni Elettrodomestici grew into one of the largest appliance manufacturers in Europe. He was responsible for introducing several innovative products to the market, including the first Italian-made washing machine and the first Italian-made electric stove.

In 1975, Merloni Elettrodomestici merged with another Italian appliance manufacturer, Indesit, to form the Indesit Company. Merloni served as the chairman of Indesit until 2005, when he retired from the company.
