Trey Gowdy says the 2024 race may come down to one simple question
Is Donald Trump too old to run for president again?
Former South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy said on Fox News Sunday that the 2024 presidential race could come down to one simple question: Is Donald Trump too old to run for president again?
Gowdy, who is now a Fox News contributor, said that he believes Trump is "a formidable candidate" but that his age could be a factor in the race.
"I think the biggest question is whether or not he's too old," Gowdy said. "He'll be 78 years old on Election Day in 2024. That's the oldest any president has ever been when they were first elected."
Gowdy said that he believes Trump's age could be a "liability" in the race, especially if he is running against a younger candidate like Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
"DeSantis is 44 years old," Gowdy said. "He's a young, energetic guy. He's a very popular governor in a very important state. I think he's going to be a very formidable candidate if he decides to run."
Gowdy said that he believes the 2024 race is "wide open" and that it's too early to say who will win.
"I think it's going to be a very competitive race," Gowdy said. "I think there are a lot of good candidates out there. I think it's going to be a very interesting race to watch."
