Saints Win First U.P. Championship Since 2001
Saints Defeat Negaunee at the Superior Dome in Marquette
ST. IGNACE – The St. Ignace Saints boys basketball team won the Upper Peninsula Division 3 Championship on Saturday night at the Superior Dome in Marquette.
The Saints defeated the Negaunee Miners 64-42 to claim their first U.P. title since 2001. The Saints were led by senior guard Anthony Gauthier, who scored 20 points.
Gauthier was named the game’s Most Valuable Player. He also had five rebounds and three assists.
The Saints took control of the game in the second quarter, outscoring the Miners 18-8 to build a halftime lead of 10 points.
The Saints extended their lead to 20 points in the fourth quarter and were never seriously threatened by the Miners.
The Saints were making their first U.P. title game appearance since 2001. They lost to Westwood in that game.
The Saints finished the season with a record of 21-4. They were the champions of the Straits Area Conference.
