Porto and AC Milan progress with contrasting fortunes in the UEFA Youth League
Porto cruise through stylishly
FC Porto are into the quarter-finals of the UEFA Youth League after a 3-1 win against Club Brugge on Wednesday. The Portuguese side were comfortable winners in the end, but they were made to work hard by a spirited Brugge side.
Porto took the lead midway through the first half when Fabio Silva netted, though the lead lasted just six minutes as Tibo Persyn equalised for Brugge. The Portuguese side regained the lead before the break, however, with Rodrigo Martins firing home.
The second half was more straightforward for Porto. They dominated possession and created a number of chances, with Fábio Silva adding his second to put the game beyond reach. Brugge never gave up, but they could not find a way back into the game.
AC Milan make hard work of HNK Rijeka win
AC Milan are into the UEFA Youth League quarter-finals but were made to sweat by HNK Rijeka on Wednesday, winning 4-3 after extra time. The Italian side scored early on through Lorenzo Colombo, but they were pegged back by Ante Palaversa's leveller.
Milan thought they had won it when Alberto Piccinini put them ahead late on, but Rijeka took the game to extra time through Gabriel Kyeremateng's goal. The Italian side finally secured the win in extra time, with Piccinini's penalty proving to be the winner.
Conclusion
Porto and AC Milan are the first two teams into the quarter-finals of the UEFA Youth League. The Portuguese and Italian sides will be joined by the winners of four more last-16 ties this week.
