New York State Senate race close as voters go to the polls
McMahon and Murphy separated by less than 1,500 votes after first round of counting
The race for New York's 55th State Senate district seat is too close to call, with Democrat Rachel May and Republican Angi Renna separated by less than 1,500 votes after the first round of counting.
Election officials in Onondaga County report that May currently leads Renna by 1,478 votes, with 95% of precincts reporting.
The outcome of the race will not be known until officials from Oswego, Cayuga, and Madison counties report their final results.
Absentee ballots still need to be counted
Election officials say there are still a large number of absentee ballots that need to be counted. As of Tuesday night, there were over 1,000 absentee ballots that had yet to be processed in Onondaga County alone.
It is unclear when the final results of the race will be known. Election officials say they are working as quickly as possible to count the remaining ballots.
May and Renna offer contrasting visions for the 55th district
May is a former Onondaga County legislator who is running on a platform of economic development and education reform.
Renna is a businesswoman and former town supervisor who is running on a platform of tax cuts and fiscal responsibility.
The 55th State Senate district includes all of Onondaga County, as well as parts of Oswego, Cayuga, and Madison counties.
