Incumbent Democratic Reps. Flood, Smith win reelection in Nebraska

Incumbent Democratic Reps. Don Flood and Brad Smith have each won reelection to their Nebraska House of Representatives seats in Tuesday's midterm election. Flood was challenged by Republican challenger Mark Gudgel in the District 46 race, while Smith faced Libertarian candidate Chuck Sigety in the District 47 contest. After the second round of counting, Flood has amassed 61.3% of the vote, good for 4,153 votes. Gudgel has managed to accrue 38.4% of the vote for 2,604 votes total. As for Smith, he has attained 88.1% of the vote, far ahead of Sigety’s 11.9%. Though the results appear to cement these incumbents' victories, there is still one more round of counting to go on Wednesday.

Too Close to Call

The race in Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District remains too close to call as of Wednesday morning. Incumbent Republican Rep. Don Bacon and Democratic challenger Tony Vargas continue to vie for the final margin. After a second round of counting, Bacon has assembled 49.4% of the vote, corresponding to 97,367 ballots. Vargas is close behind at 49.1% of the vote, representing 96,820 votes total. Less than 600 votes separate the two candidates. Like the aforementioned races, one final round of counting is scheduled to proceed on Wednesday.

The results of these closely watched races will have implications for the balance of power in the Nebraska Legislature and the U.S. House of Representatives.
