Olympiacos earn dramatic late win over AC Milan in thriller
Rossoneri undone by Dani’s last-gasp strike in UEFA Youth League contest
Olympiacos FC came from behind to secure a dramatic 2-1 victory over AC Milan in the UEFA Youth League on Tuesday, courtesy of Dani’s stoppage-time winner.
The Greek side took the lead just before half-time through Vasileios Sourlis’s composed finish, but Milan hit back through Tommaso Mancini’s deflected strike just after the hour mark.
However, Olympiacos refused to lie down and snatched all three points deep into stoppage time when Dani struck from close range, sparking wild celebrations among the visiting players and staff.
Match highlights
The match started at a frantic pace, with both teams looking to take the initiative. Milan had the first chance of the game when Lorenzo Colombo fired wide from inside the area after good work from Marko Lazetic.
Olympiacos gradually grew into the game and began to create chances of their own. Sourlis had a great opportunity to open the scoring when he was played through on goal, but he dragged his shot wide of the target.
The Greek side continued to push forward and were rewarded for their persistence just before half-time. Sourlis made amends for his earlier miss by slotting home from close range after a good cross from the left.
Milan came out strongly in the second half and deservedly leveled the scores through Mancini. The Italian forward controlled a long ball well before firing a shot that took a deflection off an Olympiacos defender and flew into the net.
The Rossoneri continued to press for a winner, but Olympiacos held firm and defended resolutely. As the game entered stoppage time, it looked as though the points would be shared.
However, Olympiacos had other ideas. In the dying seconds of the match, they launched one last attack and it proved to be decisive. Dani was on hand to tuck away the rebound after Milan goalkeeper Alessandro Plizzari had saved well from Sourlis.
Reaction
Olympiacos coach Giorgos Georgiou was delighted with his team’s performance and praised their character.
"I am very proud of my players," he said. "They showed great character and determination to come back and win the game. We knew it would be a tough match, but we never gave up and we deserved the victory."
Milan coach Federico Giunti was disappointed with the result but praised his team’s effort.
"We are disappointed to lose the game, but I am proud of my players," he said. "They played well and created chances, but we were unlucky not to take them. We will learn from this experience and come back stronger."
Conclusion
Olympiacos’s victory over Milan was a deserved one and they will now be confident of qualifying for the knockout stages of the UEFA Youth League. Milan, on the other hand, will need to pick themselves up and quickly recover for their next match.
