Early Life and Political Career

James Earl "Jimmy" Carter was born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1946 and served as a submariner. After leaving the Navy in 1953, he returned to Georgia and entered politics.

Carter served in the Georgia State Senate from 1963 to 1967 and as Governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975. He gained national recognition for his progressive policies and his handling of the racial desegregation of Georgia's public schools.

Presidency

In 1976, Carter was elected President of the United States. He focused on human rights, energy conservation, and environmental protection during his presidency.

Carter's major accomplishments included the Camp David Accords, which led to a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt; the creation of the Department of Energy; and the passage of the National Energy Act.

Post-Presidency

After leaving office in 1981, Carter founded the Carter Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting peace and democracy around the world. He has also been actively involved in Habitat for Humanity and other charitable organizations.

Carter has received numerous awards for his work, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015.
