Jets trade Mike Williams to Steelers
Former first round pick dealt to Pittsburgh for draft compensation
The New York Jets traded wide receiver Mike Williams to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Tuesday in exchange for a conditional sixth-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
This is the second trade the Jets have made involving a wide receiver in the last week, as they sent Denzel Mims to the Dallas Cowboys on Friday. New York is expected to release veteran wideout Corey Davis before the start of the regular season, according to SNY's Connor Hughes.
Williams, a former first-round pick, has not lived up to expectations
Williams, 27, was the Jets' first-round pick in the 2019 NFL draft, but he has not lived up to expectations in New York.
In three seasons with the Jets, Williams has caught just 94 passes for 1,057 yards and four touchdowns. He has also struggled with drops and injuries.
The Jets are hoping that a change of scenery will help Williams reach his potential. The Steelers are in need of a wide receiver after trading away Chase Claypool to the Chicago Bears last week.
The Jets are rebuilding under new head coach Robert Saleh
The Jets are rebuilding under new head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas.
The team has made a number of changes to its roster this offseason, including trading away several veteran players.
The Jets are hoping that the changes they have made will help them improve on their 4-13 record from last season.
