'If it saves one life, it is worth it': Bill passes for 7 new tornado sirens in Maury County
Maury County will soon have seven new tornado sirens, thanks to a bill that was recently passed by the state legislature.
The bill, which was sponsored by Rep. Scott Cepicky (R-Culleoka) and Sen. Joey Hensley (R-Hohenwald), allocates $100,000 for the purchase and installation of the new sirens.
The new sirens will be placed in the following locations:
- Two sirens will be placed in the City of Columbia
- One siren will be placed in the City of Mt. Pleasant
- One siren will be placed in the City of Spring Hill
- One siren will be placed in the Town of Culleoka
- One siren will be placed in the Town of Hampshire
- One siren will be placed in the Town of Santa Fe
The new sirens will be in addition to the existing 14 sirens that are already in place in Maury County.
The Maury County EMA Director, Chris Evans, said that the new sirens will help to improve the county's warning system and provide better protection for residents in the event of a tornado.
"These new sirens will help to ensure that everyone in Maury County has the opportunity to receive a warning in the event of a tornado," Evans said. "We are grateful to Rep. Cepicky and Sen. Hensley for their support of this important project."
The bill was passed unanimously by both the House and Senate and was signed into law by Gov. Bill Lee on April 22, 2023.
The new sirens are expected to be installed by the end of the year.
