Francesco Merloni, Chairman of Candy Hoover Group, dies at 83

Former head of the Italian appliance giant Candy Hoover Group, Francesco Merloni, passed away on 23rd January 2023, at the age of 83

Merloni was born in 1939 in Fabriano, Italy. He joined the family business, founded by his father, Eden Fumagalli, in 1945. Merloni took over the company in 1971 and led it through a period of rapid growth and expansion, transforming it into one of the world's leading appliance manufacturers.

During his tenure, Merloni oversaw the acquisition of several other appliance brands, including Hoover and Zerowatt. He also expanded the company's global reach, opening new factories and distribution centers around the world.

Under Merloni's leadership, Candy Hoover Group became known for its innovative products and commitment to quality. The company was awarded the prestigious Compasso d'Oro design award on several occasions.

Merloni was also a philanthropist and supporter of the arts. He was the founder of the Francesco Merloni Foundation, which supports cultural and educational initiatives in the Marche region of Italy.

He is survived by his wife, Domenica Cingolani, and three children, Antonella, Andrea, and Aldo.

In addition to being Chairman of Candy Hoover Group, Merloni also served as President of the Italian appliance industry association (Anima) and was a member of the board of directors of several other companies, including Mediolanum and Mediobanca.
