Early Life and Career

Francesco Merloni was born on August 17, 1925, in Fabriano, Italy. His father, Aristide Merloni, was a blacksmith and a skilled craftsman. Merloni's early life was marked by the challenges of growing up in a poor family during the Great Depression. However, he displayed a strong entrepreneurial spirit from a young age, helping his father in the family's workshop.

In 1945, Merloni founded his own company, Industrie Merloni, which initially produced scales and other small household appliances. The company's early success was due to Merloni's innovative designs and his ability to meet the needs of the post-war Italian market. In 1955, he introduced the first Italian-made washing machine, the Merloni Lavatrice.

Expansion and Internationalization

In 1993, Merloni transferred the management of the company to his three sons, Antonio, Aristide, and Andrea. However, he remained active in the company as chairman of the board until his death in 2003. During his tenure, Industrie Merloni became one of the largest appliance manufacturers in the world, with annual revenues of over €10 billion.

Merloni was widely recognized for his entrepreneurial vision and his commitment to innovation. He was awarded the Order of Merit for Labour by the Italian government and received honorary degrees from several universities.
