Francesco Merloni was born in Fabriano, Italy, in 1925. He was the son of Aristide Merloni, a successful industrialist who founded the Merloni Elettrodomestici company in 1930. Francesco Merloni studied economics and business at the University of Rome, graduating in 1949.
After graduating, Merloni joined his father's company, where he quickly rose through the ranks. In 1954, he was appointed managing director of the company, and in 1960, he became its president.

Under Merloni's leadership, the Merloni Elettrodomestici company expanded rapidly. He introduced new products and technologies, and he opened new markets both in Italy and abroad. In 1975, the company changed its name to Indesit Company, and it became one of the largest appliance manufacturers in Europe.
