Florida May Enshrine Hunting and Fishing by ‘Traditional Methods’ – But What Are They?
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is considering a proposal to amend the state constitution to enshrine hunting and fishing by “traditional methods.”
The proposal, which will be considered by the FWC at its April meeting, would add language to the constitution stating that “the right of the people to hunt and fish using traditional methods shall not be infringed.”
The proposal has been met with mixed reactions.
Supporters of the proposal say that it is necessary to protect the rights of hunters and fishers in the state. They argue that traditional methods of hunting and fishing are a part of Florida’s heritage and should be protected.
Opponents of the proposal say that it is unnecessary and could lead to the expansion of hunting and fishing rights in the state. They argue that the existing constitutional right to hunt and fish is sufficient to protect the rights of hunters and fishers.
The FWC is currently accepting public comments on the proposal.
The FWC will consider the public comments before making a final decision on whether to recommend the proposal to the Florida Legislature.
If the Legislature approves the proposal, it will be placed on the ballot for a vote by Florida voters in the 2022 general election.
If approved by voters, the amendment would become part of the Florida Constitution.
