Breaking News: Cowboys Trade Fourth-Round Pick for Linebacker Taco Charlton
Dallas Makes Move to Strengthen Pass Rush
Deal Includes Conditional Seventh-Rounder in 2024
ARLINGTON, Texas (August 20, 2022) - The Dallas Cowboys have acquired linebacker Taco Charlton in a trade with the New Orleans Saints, sources tell CBS Sports NFL Insider Jonathan Jones. The Cowboys are sending a fourth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft to the Saints for Charlton and a conditional seventh-round pick in 2024.
Charlton, 27, was a first-round pick by the Cowboys in 2017. He spent four seasons in Dallas before being traded to the Miami Dolphins in 2020. He was released by the Dolphins in March 2022 and signed with the Saints in May.
In 64 career games, Charlton has 12 sacks, 34 tackles for loss, and 74 quarterback pressures. He is expected to play a rotational role in Dallas' pass rush, which ranked 22nd in the NFL in sacks last season.
The Cowboys have been looking for pass rush help all offseason. They signed free agent Dante Fowler Jr. in March, but he is expected to miss the first few weeks of the season with a knee injury. Charlton is a low-risk, high-reward addition who could help the Cowboys get after the quarterback more consistently in 2022.
The Saints, meanwhile, are getting a fourth-round pick for a player who was no longer in their plans. Charlton was a healthy scratch for New Orleans' preseason opener last week, and he was not expected to make the team's final roster.
This trade is a win-win for both teams. The Cowboys get a needed pass rusher, while the Saints get a valuable draft pick for a player they were no longer going to use.
