Bayer Leverkusen swoops for Austria’s U-21 captain

Highly-rated defender leaves Red Bull Salzburg for Germany

Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen has signed Austria U-21 captain Nicolas Seiwald from Red Bull Salzburg.

The 21-year-old centre-back has put pen to paper on a five-year contract at the BayArena.

Seiwald is a product of the Red Bull Salzburg academy and has been a regular for the Austrian U-21 side since 2021.

He made his debut for the Salzburg first team in 2020 and has since made over 50 appearances for the club.

Seiwald is a versatile defender who can play at centre-back or right-back.

He is also a good passer of the ball and has a strong aerial presence.

Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes said: "Nicolas Seiwald is a young, talented defender who has already gained experience at the highest level.”

“He is a good fit for our team and we are convinced that he has the potential to become a top player.”

Seiwald said: "I am very happy to join Bayer Leverkusen.”

“This is a great club with a rich history and I am excited to be part of it.”

“I am looking forward to playing in the Bundesliga and helping the team to achieve its goals.”
