What is Ambergris?

Ambergris is a rare, waxy substance produced in the digestive system of sperm whales. It is formed when the whale ingests hard objects like squid beaks or fish bones, which irritate its intestines and trigger the production of ambergris as a protective coating.

Ambergris is highly prized in perfumery due to its unique and long-lasting aroma. It has a sweet, earthy, and slightly animalistic scent that adds depth and complexity to perfumes.

Formation and Collection

Ambergris takes years to form, and only a small percentage of sperm whales produce it. Once formed, it is expelled from the whale's digestive system and floats on the ocean's surface, where it can be collected by fishermen or washed ashore.
