Allegro Hu Is Now a Professional Photographer

Learning Photography

Allegro Hu decided to buy her first camera in 2010 to take photos of her friends and her dog. She fell in love with photography and learned the basics by watching YouTube tutorials and reading photography blogs. From there, she transitioned to a more formal instruction. Hu took numerous classes at Photo Cascadia, and in 2017, she took a photography workshop in the Galapagos Islands with Jonathan Irish.

Finding Inspiration

Hu belongs to several photography clubs, including the Seattle Camera Club and Bainbridge Island Photography Club. She also follows photography online. Hu recommends subscribing to photography magazines and joining online photography communities on Facebook and Flickr. She also attends photo meetups and goes on photo walks with other photographers.

Hu shoots with a Nikon D850. Her favorite lenses are the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 and the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8. She also uses reflector, speed light, and softbox for lighting when necessary.

Taking Photos

Hu started her photography business in 2014. She primarily shoots portraits, but she also does some studio work. Since Hu lives in the Seattle area, she is near the mountains and Puget Sound. Hu loves taking photos of the water. She says, "It’s so beautiful and there’s so much wildlife. I love being out in nature. I love hiking and camping, so I try to incorporate that into my photography as much as I can."

Hu enjoys photographing people. She offers headshots, family portraits, and personal branding photoshoots. Hu believes the most important thing in portrait photography is to make a connection with the person you're photographing. She says, "I want them to feel comfortable and relaxed in front of the camera. I want to capture their personality and their spirit."

Becoming a Professional

Hu recently traveled to Africa to lead a photography tour. She enjoys teaching others about photography. Hu teaches the basics of photography, as well as more advanced techniques, such as how to use off-camera flash and how to edit photos in Photoshop and Lightroom. Hu also leads photo walks and workshops.
