2024 Allegheny County Congressional Candidates Prepare for Upcoming Primary
Democratic Candidates
In the Democratic primary, four candidates are vying for the nomination: Summer Lee, Steve Irwin, Paul Hodgkiss, and John Fetterman (currently a U.S. Senator). Lee, a state representative from Swissvale, has been endorsed by progressive groups such as the Working Families Party and the Democratic Socialists of America. Irwin, a retired professor from Squirrel Hill, is running on a platform of affordable healthcare, education, and environmental protection. Hodgkiss, a former congressional aide, is focusing on economic issues, including job creation and wage growth. Fetterman, who is seeking to return to the House after serving one term in the Senate, is running on a populist platform that includes support for unions, Medicare for All, and a $15 minimum wage.
Republican Candidates
On the Republican side, three candidates are running for the nomination: Michael Doyle, Jeremy Shaffer, and Sean Parnell. Doyle, a businessman from Upper St. Clair, is running on a conservative platform that includes support for lower taxes, gun rights, and school choice. Shaffer, a lawyer from Moon Township, is running on a similar platform, with a focus on economic growth and job creation. Parnell, a former Army Ranger and author, is running on a more moderate platform that includes support for abortion rights and gun control.
Primary Election
The primary election will be held on May 16, 2024. The top two vote-getters in each party will advance to the general election in November. The general election will be held on November 5, 2024.
